BFI makes presentation at St. Hedwig City Council Meeting.
(Information gathered from the Wilson County News, December 8 issue)
BFI made a presentation at the St. Hedwig city council meeting to set the record straight on the Tessman Road Landfill. There they stated that MEG (Martinez Environmental Group) has been giving misinformation about the landfill and the expansion. Mr. Noto discussed the High-tech safeguards in place at the landfill and the thick plastic liner that acts as barrier against leakage. Mr. Floyd was quoted as saying about MEG members:
"They are good, hard-working people--they just don't have the right information."
Mr. Floyd also told the City Council that the solid waste taken to the Tessman Road landfill will not be imported from outside the San Antonio area.

It is interesting to note the following facts that were not mentioned at the St Hedwig city council meeting. While the BFI representatives made much emphasis on the high-tech safeguards in place at the landfill they did not admit that there does not exist any technology for containing landfill toxins. The plastic liner in place at the Tessman Road landfill will leak. It is only a matter of time. The Federal Goverment, EPA, and plastic liner manufacturers admit this fact. With respect to methane emmissions, no methane collection system can collect all the methane emitted from a landfill. At best 60 to 80% is collected.
Furthermore, while Mr. Floyd stated that the landfill will only collect refuse from the San Antonio and surrounding area, MEG has produced a TNRCC document submitted by BFI stating that they are accepting refuse from a 36 county area. (Look below to view the permit.)
