Slam Dunk!  BFI attempts to weaken MEG support one city at a time--but is unsuccessful!

BFI tried to get the city of Kirby to pass a resolution of neutrality with respect to the Tessman Road landfill expansion.  Linda Rife, representative of BFI, stated that passing this resolution would help to get MEG, and the City of China Grove, back to the negotiating table.  She also stated that this resolution would have no impact on the judges who are currently ruling in the case.

What Ms. Rife failed to mention is that a resolution for neutrality would be a considerable "feather in the hat" of BFI when it comes time for the TNRCC to rule on the matter.

While the current case is important it is only a component of the decision process the TNRCC will use to make their final ruling on the permit expansion.

Imagine the impact BFI would have if it were able to bring to the TNRCC a list of municipalities who had passed resolutions against the expansion but now are "neutral".  BFI could make a point that opposition is diminishing and that the opposition was not founded on facts but rather mis-information.

You can now see why BFI is at work on the communities of Kirby, Elmendorf, St. Hedwig, Converse, and San Antonio to change their positions.

So in football terms:  Ms. Rife was correct--passing a resolution of neutrality wouldn't change the 3rd quarter score--but it will cost us the home-field advantage and ultimately just might cost us the game.
