Was the warm glow of an October sky really the BFI Tessman Road Landfill on fire?

According to a commentary and article in the Express-news on October 4th the BFI Tessman Road Landfill caught fire!

While the fire was considered a small problem, the lack of an adequate fire plan caused several problems:

  • The personnel that night could not give the address of the fire's location!
  • According 911 recordings, the personnel on sight had little knowledge of how to handle the situation
  • No one at the landfill could identify what was burning thereby prompting a response from the HAZARDOUS MATERIALS UNIT.

It is amazing to see that emergency training at the BFI Tessman Landfill is so poorly performed that the employees and community are placed in such a terrible situation.

As expected, BFI downplays this incident as being marginal.
